The meaning of the fort is the iron fort. It is located at the Sahyadri range in the hill station of Lonavala. It divides the basins of Pawna and Indrayani. There is no precise knowledge as to who built the fort. However, it is believed that Guru Govind Singh built it so that it can be utilized as a prison.


It is associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and other Maratha and Vidarbha rulers. This is why it was considered a great military marvel fort during pre-historic British time. This is because many dynasties such as Nizamshahis, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Statavahanas, Mughals and Chalukyas occupied it for a long time.

You don’t need to be scared of the body ache and the wastage of your time. It is a trek for beginners and hence is very easy. The Lohagad fort distance is just 50 kilometres from Pune and Mumbai. You need to catch a train for Lonavala followed by the local train for Malavali station. The fort is 5 kilometres from the base village. So, you can catch a cab or taxi till there. You will reach there in 45 minutes.

If you are coming by bus, then you need to take the bus to Lonavala followed by a private cab or taxi to Lohagad wadi village. You will reach there in an hour.

If you are an international trekker coming from foreign countries, then you need to get down at Pune airport. The distance between the airport and the Lohagad fort is 65 kilometres. It will take 3 hours to reach there. This is how to reach Lohagad fort.

The best time to go to Lohagad is June to February due to the medium temperature of 15 to 22 degree celsius. There are beautiful small streams in the fort which look wonderful in monsoon season. However, you need to be careful while climbing since it will be all wet and slippery. The temperature in summer is 23 to 29-degree celsius. You can easily complete the trek within 4 hours as there are 250 to 300 steps which is a distance of 10 kilometres.

There are four entrances of Lohagad which are Narayan Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja and Maha Darwaja. It is very crowded during weekends so try to go during weekdays. There is no entry fees and no extra charges for photography. The time to visit the fort is 9 A.M to 6.00 P.M. It is a very short-distanced trek from the base village but if you want a trek of longer duration, then you can begin from the Bhaja village to Gomukh Kund and then choose left to go to Lohagad fort.
